June 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Listed below is some information regarding Professional Development on Equity, the June 11, 2019 Board of Education meeting, the Haddon Heights Mural Dedication, the New Jersey Inclusive Education Poster Winner, and Recognition of Student Athletes.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON EQUITY

On May 9, 2018, the Jr./Sr. High School staff continued their equity training with Mr. George Guy. This was the third session this year. The training focused on teacher-student relationships and asked teachers to identify their top concerns. Some responses included, motivation, completion of work, students not doing homework, and others. These items were then addressed by Mr. Guy through the lens of equity. Next, staff watched and reviewed a TED talk from Dr. Monique Morris on her book which discussed young women of color being "pushed-out" by the very place that is supposed to be their safe place. Staff reflected on how this might apply to students at Haddon Heights and then randomly reviewed other teacher responses to see if teachers had commonalities or saw these situations differently.

JUNE 11, 2019 BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

The Board of Education will be discussing the 2019-2020 District Goals at the June 11, 2019 Board of Education meeting. The meeting will begin promptly at 7:30 pm in the Seventh Avenue School multipurpose room.

HADDON HEIGHTS MURAL DEDICATION

Saturday, May 11th was the Haddon Heights Mural dedication. This project was made possible with support from Heights in Progress, Perkins Center for the Arts, the Haddon Heights School District, and the Borough of Haddon Heights. Our students worked with artists from the Perkins Center of the Arts to create this beautiful piece of art. The artwork is located on the corner of West Atlantic Avenue and Station Avenue in Haddon Heights. Listed below is a picture of the plaque the district received at the dedication.
