Dear Parents and Guardians,

Listed below is some information regarding the HBCU College Fair, the Connected Action Road map, quad-district articulation meeting, and PCAST.


The information listed below was shared by Ms. Michele Mendenhall, Supervisor of Pupil Services/Guidance.

In 1999, Malcolm Bernard Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) College Fair was founded as a nonprofit/volunteer organization that partners with local schools and community organizations to help promote higher education opportunities throughout the New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York areas. In 2003, The Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair partnered with the NJ Department of Education to expand the reach of their services. In 2018, Malcolm Bernard HBCU Fair celebrated its 20th anniversary of providing HBCU with diverse and qualified applicants. In this same year, Haddon Heights sponsored its first trip to the Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair.

The registration and preparation for the HCBU College Fair began in the summer when Ms. Michele Mendenhall, Supervisor of Pupil Services, registered the Haddon Heights School District to attend the fair. In October, the Guidance Department went into the senior homerooms and asked for interested students to sign up for the fair. Three weeks prior to the November 13th fair, participating students met with Guidance Counselors and the Supervisor of Pupil Services where they completed an online profile and were taught interviewing skills and appropriate interviewing attire. Guidance Counselors also created folders for each student attending the fair which included several official copies of their transcript, SAT scores, and registration codes.

On the day of the Malcolm Bernard HBCU Fair, Haddon Heights High School had 12 out of the 19 students who attended accepted to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, with 27 acceptances offered in all. Four students received partial or full scholarships. Two students were accepted into the NJ Rising Scholars Program which is funded by the NJ Amistad Commission for students who are interested in attending any Historically Black College and University. Students selected for the Rising Scholars Program are eligible for partial and full scholarships.

On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, Mr. Ronald Corn, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, attended a workshop entitled, "The Connected Action Road map." The purpose of the workshop was to connect standards, student learning, professional learning, and teacher and principal effectiveness. Overall, the Connected Action Road map (CAR) aligns the school improvement process and makes it more coherent. The workshop provided effective strategies to unpack the standards, run effective PLC’s and design common unit plans and common assessments. Mr. Corn turn keyed the workshop for new teachers and invited all staff members to attend.


Administrators from Barrington, Lawnside, Merchantville, and Haddon Heights met on November 29, 2018 to further discuss curriculum development and the concept of writing in general. After the success of the quad-district Social Studies curriculum writing, the committee decided to continue writing curriculum jointly with the expansion of Science, English Language Arts, and Mathematics.

The districts also discussed sharing their elementary proficiency scales for writing and agreed that staff in all districts should utilize the state rubric when writing. This should benefit the students because all the districts would be assessing the same way. It should also bring consistency to writing expectations for students coming into the high school. All staff would have a common language (discussing the proficiency scales and rubrics) and this should allow the high school ELA teachers to build on that framework.


The students in Mr. Celli and Ms. Kahlbom's PCAST class visited Camden County College as part of their transition plan indicated in their IEP's. Through the PCAST class, the students learned about the differences in support offered between high school and college. They were able to actively participate in discussions with Joanne Kinzy, Director of Disability Services and Loretta Katkow, Student Recruiter. Our students were complimented on how well prepared and interested they were, as well as their respectful demeanor. Students toured multiple programs and buildings discovering what is offered at the college.
