November 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Listed below is some information regarding our Senior High Choir, Board of Education Grade Level Schools update, Special Education Parent Advocacy Group, Elementary Schools 6th grade Haunted Hall, High School Career and Education Clinic, and the High School Marching Band and Colorguard.

SENIOR HIGH CHOIR

Twenty one members from our Senior High Choir attended a day long "Young Men's Festival of Song" at Rowan University. Our students were able to collaborate with other choir members from all over the area to learn vocal technique, new repertoire, and work under amazing conductors from universities and professional choirs in the tristate area.

BOARD OF EDUCATION GRADE LEVEL SCHOOLS UPDATE

The Board of Education Curriculum Committee met and discussed the feedback received from the public. This included information the public shared at the October 9, 2018 Board of Education meeting as well as emails the public sent to the Board of Education and Administration. After participating in the Board of Education Curriculum Committee meeting, I have decided that I will not be making the recommendation to move to Grade Level Schools. However, within our current K-6 configuration, Administration and the Board of Education will continue to research and explore ways to address some of the concerns the public has shared. We appreciate all of the time the public has taken to share their thoughts on this matter and will be presenting ways we can possibly address some of the concerns that have been brought forward regarding the Elementary Schools at the November 13, 2018 Board of Education meeting (Seventh Avenue School multipurpose room at 7:30 pm).

The PowerPoint presentation from the evening will be on the Haddon Heights School District website on November 14, 2018. You can find the presentation from November 13, 2018 on the district website homepage by selecting the following menus: District Info, Board of Education, and then Presentations.

SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT ADVOCACY GROUP

On Thursday, October 4, 2018, the Special Education Parent Advocacy Group hosted a presentation, "Using a Growth Mindset" featuring Guest Speaker, Judy Marino, one of our School Psychologists. Mrs. Renner, Director of Special Education, collaborated with Barrington, Lawnside, and Merchantville Directors to ensure that families from the other towns were aware of the invitation to attend the presentation. The session focused on ways to use growth mindset in your child's day. Information was shared regarding "growth mindset" versus "fixed mindset" as well as specific ways to change our words so that we help change our children's way of thinking. The presentation can be viewed by visiting the following link and scrolling to past events.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS 6TH GRADE HAUNTED HALL

The annual 6th grade Haunted Hall was held on Friday, October 19th. The 6th grade students put together skits and performed them throughout the night for all the parents and community members that attended the event. The students did a tremendous job not only with their skits, but with all of their props as well. It was a great event and was well attended by students, parents, and residents.

HIGH SCHOOL CAREER AND EDUCATION CLINIC

On October 24th, Higher Ed. Assist hosted a two hour career and education clinic called "Find My Path" for our juniors and seniors. The program, led by Dr. Thomas Maguire, showcased local career professionals who shared their stories with our students. All students that participated will receive a workbook portfolio, complete with career and education assessments and worksheets.
