October 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Listed below is some information regarding a five year curriculum review plan, the October 9, 2018 Board of Education Meeting, and the No Place for Hate Program.

FIVE YEAR CURRICULUM REVIEW PLAN

Mr. Corn, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, has prepared a five year curriculum review schedule. This is a new approach to curriculum review.  Now every course in the district (K-12) will be reviewed on a rotating five year basis. A committee comprised of Mr. Corn, the principals, Ms. Mendenhall, Supervisor of Pupil Services/Guidance, classroom teachers, and classroom specialists will review curriculum for each area. They will determine if the current curriculum is meeting the high expectations as set forth by the district and state, progressing toward that goal, or not meeting the standards. If the curriculum is not meeting standards then the committee will review and recommend new curriculum for the grade level or the entire district depending on the information analyzed in the review. Proposed new curriculum will go through a year of evaluation, a year of planning and writing, and two years of implementation while continually reviewing.

OCTOBER 9, 2018 BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

The October 9, 2018 Haddon Heights Board of Education meeting will take place at Atlantic Avenue School in the gymnasium at 7:30 pm. During the meeting there will be a presentation on information regarding grade level schools.

The presentation will provide information about the potential grade level configuration, arrival and dismissal times, financial implications, enrollment numbers, benefits, concerns, etc.  The meeting will also offer an opportunity to receive the public's input.  During the second public comments portion of the meeting, following the grade level school presentation, we encourage parents, community members, staff, students, administration, etc. to share any comments or questions they may have with everyone.

The PowerPoint presentation from the evening will be on the Haddon Heights School District website on October 10, 2018.  You can find the presentation on October 10, 2018 on the district website homepage by selecting the following menus:  District Info, Board of Education, and then Presentations.

The Board of Education will not be voting on grade level schools at the October 9, 2018 meeting.

NO PLACE FOR HATE PROGRAM

Ms. Mendenhall, Supervisor of Pupil Services/Guidance, and Ms. Marinella-McGill, High School Guidance Counselor effective November 1 st , brought the No Place for Hate program to our Jr./Sr. High School. Several staff members and students have volunteered to assist in the implementation of the No Place for Hate program. The Anti-Defamation League’s program, No Place for Hate, is a self-directed program helping all of the stakeholders take the lead on improving and maintaining school climate so all students can thrive. This initiative is a school climate improvement framework that provides schools with an organizing framework for combating any bias, bullying, and hatred, leading to long-term solutions for creating and maintaining a positive climate.
