The Role of the School Counselor: 

The mission of the Haddon Heights Elementary School Counseling Program is to provide comprehensive counseling services to maximize academic achievement, career development and awareness, and the social emotional learning of every student.

School Counseling is a comprehensive service that begins when students enter kindergarten and continues throughout their tenure as Haddon Heights students. Designed to facilitate academic success, development, decision-making, and adjustment, the school counseling program is designed to be implemented in a collaborative manner with school staff.

School counseling services revolve around the identified needs of the student population at each school and is inclusive of all students.   School counselors foster a positive school environment by embracing and promoting diversity.

School counselors are student advocates and advocate for the needs of all students by providing developmentally appropriate guidance to students and support in removing barriers that adversely impact their achievement.   Mr. Baals and Ms. Gorczynski share in the responsibility of facilitating the support systems needed to ensure that each student in HH Elementary is equipped, academically and socially, to become productive members of society.  Working in collaboration with other staff and education programs, our Counselors ensures equity and access to program services so that every student is supported in achieving his/her full potential.

Mr. Baals and Ms. Gorczynski provide support for students by offering classroom lessons, group counseling sessions, individual counseling sessions and grief/crisis support.  In addition, they can serve as a resource to students, parents and school staff of available community opportunities.

Through a comprehensive school counseling program, Mr. Baals and Ms. Gorczynski can provide a variety of services including:

  •  Individual Counseling

  • Group Counseling

  • Classroom guidance

  • Academic, college, and career awareness

  • Interpreting standardized test results

  • Grief and crisis counseling

  • Responding to and assisting with crises

  • Developing confidential relationships with students

  • Advocating for students

  • Promoting and monitoring student success in a collaborative manner

  • Helping students overcome barriers to learning

  • Providing preventive and intervention strategies for student success

  • Facilitating parent/teacher conferences when needed

  • Serving as a resource to students of available community opportunities

  • Serving as a resource for school staff and parents

  • Serving as a resource for community referrals

  • Providing parent and community outreach

  • Fostering a positive school environment by embracing and promoting diversity

  • Serving as a "Helper" or "Advocate" to all students in our schools

  • Collaborating and coordinating with teachers, parents, CST, and Administration

  • Implementing a school counseling program that meets the needs and develops the skills and interests of various stages of a child's development

  • Serving as the Coordinator for I&RS and 504 Accommodation Plans

  • Serving as the HIB Specialists at Glenview, Atlantic and Seventh Ave Schools 

  • Serving as the school Coordinators for Character Education
