June 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Listed below is some information regarding happenings at the Elementary Schools, the Jr./Sr. High School, and in the area of Special Education.

Bridge the Gap
On Thursday, May 24th, as part of the Bridge the Gap program, some of our High School AP Biology students went to our Elementary Schools and performed experiments in some of the classrooms. The High School students did a very good job explaining and performing the experiments for the students. The Elementary students displayed a lot of enthusiasm and excitement as the High School students interacted with them and performed the experiments.

PTG Run Like It's Recess Event
On Sunday, May 20th, the PTG held their 5th annual Run Like It's Recess event. The event allowed participants to enter a 5k race or 1 mile walk. It was a great event and very well attended.

This I Believe Senior Projec
Our senior students at Haddon Heights High School participate in a culminating project titled This I Believe. This I Believe is a non-profit national organization whose goal is to engage students to write about a core belief that guides their lives. This project encourages student introspection, sharing, and discussion. Once the senior students complete their essays, they present their belief in a two-minute speech before a panel of teachers, administrators, board of education members, and local council members. The panelists have the opportunity to ask questions and assess the presentation using a rubric. This I Believe has been a successful project for our senior students for many years.

Dare to Dream Student Leadership Conference
The New Jersey Department of Education's Office of Special Education sponsored a Dare to Dream student leadership conference that highlighted strategies and information to prepare High School students with disabilities for college and career readiness. The conference featured keynote presentations from accomplished students and young adults with disabilities who have demonstrated exemplary self-advocacy and leadership skills. Additionally, the conference program included a variety of concurrent workshop sessions that provided conference attendees opportunities to gain insight into the transition from school to adult life process.

Mrs. Renner, Director of Special Education, and members of the Haddon Heights team have attended in the past. This year, the Haddon Heights team was invited to lead a workshop session by Bob Haugh, Transition Coordinator of the Office of Special Education Professional Development, because of their positive role in the implementation of Person Centered Planning.

Mr. Celli, Special Education Teacher, and Ms. Kahlbom, Speech Therapist, were invited and worked with the students in preparation of this opportunity.

On Monday, May 14th, the team took Haddon Heights students to the conference to participate and our students led a session! The description for the session follows:

In this session students will choose a social media format to creatively showcase their best self! Students will have the opportunity to create a take home replica from their selected social media platform, highlighting their strengths and dreams through guided discussion and introspection. This breakout session encourages the use of person centered thinking and practices and supports participation of all students and educators.

The students that presented at the Dare to Dream conference rose to the occasion as leaders and their sessions were packed! Mr. Bob Haugh shared that Mr. Celli and Ms. Kahlbom's work in Person Centered Planning at Haddon Heights is the lighthouse of the state!
